Today the first month is passing since the high-profile trial against Dr. Fatos Nano began. But what stands out in this trial is its unreasonable length. There have been more than 55 court hearings and the biggest surprise is that the trial still has not gone any further. In the closed statement that the defendant presented yesterday before the court, he once again declared that he could not admit guilt for unfounded and politically motivated charges. He called the whole process a political trial, aimed at striking the socialist alternative and the Albanian opposition itself. In this context, the way his case is being handled by the official propaganda and by various segments of the press should also be seen. We ask: why was this chain of unfounded accusations about “secrets” and “espionage,” which aimed to create imaginary internal enemies, not halted earlier? Why was the trial staged in this way and why was it dragged out for so long? These questions require answers not only for the fate of one man, but also for the fate of pluralism and the rule of law in Albania. (To be continued on page 2)
