LET US STOP CHOLERA

TIRANA, A THREATENED CITY
- Where do we live, where do we eat, where do children play?!
The introduction of harmful microorganisms into dirty sewage water through waste discharged from homes, industrial facilities, social-cultural institutions, etc., constitutes an epidemiological risk. All wastewater from homes, services, production units, etc., must be removed through a functional sewer network. Damaged sewers, open manholes, sewage flowing on the surface, and the presence of waste near inhabited areas increase the risk of infection.
No infectious disease spreads more easily than cholera when hygiene is lacking. Contaminated water, food left uncovered, unclean environments, flies, and contact with unwashed hands become links in a very dangerous chain. Therefore, hygienic-sanitary measures are not ordinary advice, but a matter of the day for every family, every enterprise, and every institution.
In neighborhoods and enterprises, taps, reservoirs, water-supply networks, places where food is sold, collective kitchens, cafeterias, kindergartens and crèches must be checked constantly. Garbage accumulation must be avoided, problematic places must be disinfected, and health authorities must be informed immediately of any case of diarrhea, vomiting, or suspicion.
The danger is real and requires civic vigilance, discipline, and a quick response.

The first Seniri
As part of the actions to clean up the city, additional measures have been taken in several neighborhoods. Municipal service workers, volunteers and residents have taken part in removing waste and cleaning shared spaces. Leaders call for this not to remain a one-day initiative, but to become a permanent civic discipline.
The café itself with cholera
The conditions in premises, the sale of food in unsuitable conditions, the use of unwashed utensils and the lack of safe water create the conditions for the spread of diseases. Inspections must be frequent, especially at points of sale near inhabited areas and schools.
The municipality...
“We are making every effort”
For many citizens of Tirana, this advice applies: do not go to the markets empty-handed.
Everywhere there is a lack of cleaning equipment, there are no closed barrels, bins, or transport equipment for removing waste. On the other hand, municipal enterprises are facing a shortage of fuel, spare parts, and labor. Nevertheless, according to municipal officials, efforts are being made to improve the situation and prevent further deterioration of hygiene in neighborhoods and markets.
Awareness among residents is also needed: do not throw waste outside the designated places, do not let dirty water flow on the surface, and keep yards and shared spaces clean.
The danger of sewage
- For many citizens of Tirana, this advice applies: do not wash your hands?!
Sewage leaks, open manholes, blocked channels and the lack of disinfection constitute a constant source of infections. In some areas of the capital, dirty water passes near the entrances of apartment buildings, near schools and places where children move around. Residents complain that the situation has been repeating for a long time and the solutions are only partial.
Cholera does not forgive negligence. Even a glass of contaminated water, an unwashed vegetable, or food touched by dirty hands can become the cause of disease. Care must begin at home and continue through all levels of public service.
Is drinking water monitored?
- So, at 1-3°C the water remains in this...[?]
Drinking water must be regularly monitored at the source, in reservoirs and in the network. Chlorination, bacteriological analyses and protection of supply points are essential measures. Any interruption of supply or any disturbance in the network increases the risk of contamination.
In the absence of full confidence in the quality of the water, citizens are advised to boil it before use and keep it sealed in clean containers.
