The Nano case is doing good beyond the first ones

The Nano case has now turned from the subject of parliamentary hatred into the starting point of another deep intervention in the country’s affairs and in the cohesion of democracy. It has become clear to everyone how power is dealing with political opponents and how it is stretching out this story to cover up its own failures. It should be noted that, with the unavoidable issue now before public opinion, the “Nano case” is opening the door to broader international scrutiny of Albania. It is being placed at the center of attention of various forums, while it is increasingly becoming apparent that the procedures followed have violated the fundamental norms of a state governed by law. Over the years, doubts have continuously been raised about the way this issue has been handled. Now those doubts are turning into a major international concern, and this does nothing to serve the country’s image. On a broader level, this shows that Albania still suffers from political interference in the justice system. Instead of strengthening confidence in the institutions, the feeling is being created that they are used according to the interests of the moment. This is precisely what makes the Nano case far more than an internal political conflict. (Continued on page 2)

Gjirokastra under the weight of the President’s visit

Wandering through the parts of the city, it is clear that the visit of the head of state has brought an unusual mobilization of the local administration. Facades have been painted, roads have been repaired, and a ceremonial fever is appearing that is immediately noticeable. However, beyond the hastily tidied-up surface, the residents seem to view this bustle with a certain skepticism. They ask whether their everyday problems will be solved, or whether everything will remain only within the framework of the official reception and the photographs. In short conversations, it becomes clear that the main concerns are unemployment, poverty, and the lack of investment. For this reason, the President’s visit is experienced more as a protocol event than as a sign of real change. (Continued on page 6)

The defense of former President Alia and former prime ministers who were left

A long article presents the defense arguments for former President Alia and for several former prime ministers, stressing that the procedures followed have raised serious questions. It refers to the manner in which evidence was handled and to the treatment of high-ranking figures of the former regime. The text seeks to show that the case cannot be treated only as a simple punitive act, but as a test of the standards of the rule of law. Consequently, the way this process ends will have consequences for public perceptions of justice. (Continued on page 2)
