CONCERN AND A JUST REQUEST FOR THE RESOLUTION OF THE “NANO QUESTION”
Resolution of the Italo-Arbëresh Intergovernmental Council for speeding up the release of Fatos Nano
In recent days the movement for the release of Fatos Nano has become increasingly broad and better organized. It is being joined by voices and various organizations from Albania and from abroad.
On 17 September, the Italo-Arbëresh Intergovernmental Council, based in Cosenza, Italy, adopted a resolution calling for the immediate release of Fatos Nano. The resolution states that “the president of the Socialist Party of Albania has been taken hostage by the Berisha clique in power.” It also calls on the Italian Government, its deputies and senators, the European Community, the Council of Europe and the OSCE “to intervene with the Albanian Government for the immediate release of Fatos Nano.”
Since the beginning of Fatos Nano’s unjust imprisonment, we have called for it to end as soon as possible. We have stated that his arrest and detention in prison have not been a matter of justice, but a political matter. This is becoming increasingly clear to both domestic and foreign public opinion.
His release would be a necessary step toward restoring a climate of trust, respecting political freedoms and rights, and preventing any further deterioration of political life in the country.
The Socialist Party of Albania regards this resolution as important support in its efforts to uphold justice and emerge from an unacceptable political situation.
