THE SOCIALIST PARTY IS DETERMINED TO DEFEND DEMOCRACY IN ALBANIA

The people told Berisha’s ten provocateurs that: - it does not agree with constitutional violations, - it does not agree with the governance of the PD and Berisha, - it does not accept the alarming government corruption, - it does not accept any kind of dictatorship. We consider this movement by the representatives of the parliamentary opposition at the protest meeting in Tirana on 11 September, as well as the support and backing it received from the people, to be entirely democratic and popular. For us, this movement was calm, peaceful, and carried out in a constitutional and civic spirit. It sought and succeeded in presenting to the government and the President of the Republic the political, economic, and social opinion of a part of the Albanian people, who feel deeply disappointed and outraged by the serious situation created in the country. In this movement, as in every other political or social decision of the parliamentary opposition, the initiatives, demands, and discontent of many Albanian citizens found direct expression. Being a peaceful and democratic protest, this movement had no reason whatsoever to be obstructed or policed by force. On the contrary, the duty of the state is to guarantee its normal development and to hear its voice. The state has no reason to fear free speech or the protest of its own citizens when it is held within democratic rules. We note that today’s authorities, instead of reflecting on this serious social and political reality, tried to present the movement as anti-state, to smear it, and to evade their own responsibilities. This is the wrong path, because propaganda and labels do not cover unemployment, misery, corruption, insecurity, and the crisis of confidence that has gripped the country. The Socialist Party is determined to defend democracy and pluralism, to defend the opposition’s right to speak and the people’s right to demand accountability. We stand for the peaceful development of political life, for institutional dialogue, and for solutions that serve the citizen. But at the same time we are against any repression, against any arbitrariness, and against any attempt to establish personal power above the law and the Constitution. Meetings of Socialist Party leaders with ambassadors

As a continuation of the meetings with representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in our country, yesterday Socialist Party leaders also held meetings with diplomatic representatives of various countries. At the Socialist Party headquarters, its chairman, Mr. Fatos Nano, received the ambassador of the United Kingdom in Albania, Mr. [?]. The discussion focused on recent political developments, the economic situation, and the need to respect democratic standards. Press reports link the information given by the government to the interest of foreign missions in stability in the country and in the progress of reforms. The meetings also discussed bilateral relations, the progress of economic reforms, the political climate in Albania, and the importance of dialogue among political forces. SKËNDER GJINUSHI: “THE PARTIES THAT VOTED ‘NO’ IN THE REFERENDUM MUST STEP BACK FROM THEIR CAPRICES”

— In the discussion between the social democratic parties and the allied parliamentary opposition, with the directors of each of the TV stations and state radio officials, with the leaders of PP and PSD, — “No” in the referendum is a clearly expressed political will by the citizens and cannot be ignored with propagandistic explanations. — The forces that insist on imposing a constitutional solution without consensus must reflect on the result and accept the need for political dialogue.
