The Socialist Party of Albania strongly condemns this police terror being inflicted on the opposition and calls on the Albanian people and international public opinion to defend, by all means, freedom and democracy from the rule of violence and corruption. The head of state, since the end of the 16 October elections, when he saw that he had lost the entire media and state monopoly over the commissions, has begun his shameless and unscrupulous campaign to seize, by any means, approval of his authoritarian draft constitution. To that end, state, police, financial, health, and media structures have been put into action. According to our estimates, more than 2 million dollars are being used for this presidential campaign, while the people are becoming poorer, unemployment is rising, and the economy is being destroyed. At the same time, cholera continues to wreak havoc in towns and villages, while the healthcare system, ruined by militancy and the government's incompetence, is unable to serve the people. Instead of medicine and medical care, citizens receive propaganda, pressure, and deceit. There is no democracy without an opposition, there is no rule of law with political police, and there is no future for the country with corruption built into the system. The Socialist Party will stand in defense of democratic freedoms, the truth, and the rights of Albanian citizens.
