THE SOVEREIGN HAS SHUT HIM UP, BUT HE DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO BE SILENT

The Workers’ Party ended its mission after 47 years, while the Democratic Party is already feeling the end after 47 months. Berisha’s failed referendum is nothing other than an acceptance of the results of the coming elections, which will be nothing but the holding of a second referendum on this issue. He would do better for the DP as well In the small town of Vlora, in the 17th century, a famous poet was born and lived who satirized the occupiers, exploiters, and traitors of his country, ending his famous poem “The Carpet Years” with the sentence: “See the truth, you gypsies, on the baking tray, because the stinking ones are dying from the foul smell like carcasses.” Albanians truly no longer believe, then, officially and out loud, what Berisha told the Democratic deputies two months ago in Vlora, but the fact is that after the loss of the referendum on 6 November 1994, Albania is feeling calmer. In the liberated atmosphere, the twisted faces of those who until yesterday raged like wild beasts are also turning red, especially in the last weeks before the people spoke out. Of course, the reddest of all is the one who stood in front of the tanks in anti-communism with his pockets full of gold, and now took the entire army and police under his arm and brought them out into the squares to frighten and threaten the people. Those who blindly support him were convinced that they had caught the sun with their hand, and were in such a hurry that already on the evening of 6 November they began waving imaginary victories. But because lies have short legs, it soon became clear that the only winners of 6 November were millions of Albanians. In the opposition it is beginning to be understood that one can live even without Berisha, and that among its ranks there are wise and intelligent politicians and statesmen who do not see the country as personal property. Meanwhile, in the majority the same moldy idea continues to drag on, that Albania needs a “strong man,” a “savior,” a “man sent from above.” In truth, the Albanian people have given a clear answer to the 6 November adventure. It said no to the concentration of power, no to a president with monarchical powers, no to turning back in history. Berisha read this as a personal challenge and is trying to turn Albanians into forced listeners to his monologues. But the sovereign has shut him up. The problem is that he does not know how to be silent. (partially unreadable text)[?]

This Will Be the Shortest-Lived Dictatorship

A re-awareness from Pogradec who is in Germany writes to Fatos Nano Dear brother Fatos! Things are going[?], they are improving, and how are the matters of the mother’s clandestine teachers? The government’s monstrosity is announcing itself in the electoral system, in punishments and economic destruction. Most Albanians know that we are heading toward the abyss and know that evil has one name and one address. I remember your calm and measured words, but also your manly conduct in prison. Those who today trumpet democracy have become guardians of a vengeful power. The citizens’ response will come, and it will be strong. This will be the shortest-lived dictatorship. Respectfully, Gëzim from Pogradec[?] (Continues on page 5)

The Socialist Party and the social democrats before the people, for open communication...

Ylli in yesterday’s speech of the Steering Committee of the PSD, in which the chairman of the PSSH also took part, Ylli did not raise the issue of creating a federation, and comrade N[?]ano must have understood that. As we learned a day earlier, on Saturday, the PSD organization in Tirana organized a meeting with the participation of its chairman, Mr. Skënder Gjinushi, and the chairman of the PSSH, Mr. Fatos Nano. In his opening speech, Mr. Gjinushi spoke about the need for cooperation among left-wing forces, for increasing communication with the electorate, and for the necessity of creating a credible alternative to the current power. Assessing the result of the referendum of 6 November, he said that the people had already given their judgment. During the discussions, various views were raised on forms of political rapprochement. The idea of a federation was also mentioned, but it was not set as a condition by those present. The emphasis was placed on joint action, mutual respect, and preserving the political identity of each force. (unreadable text at end)[?]

Greater Responsibility

The “overthrown” government is on the offensive. Skënder Nushi[?] The government overthrown by the people is not stopping its offensive. After the defeat in the referendum, its leaders are seeking to keep every link of the state under control and to expand their influence over the administration, the police, and the media. This situation requires greater responsibility from all opposition forces and from civil society. In this climate, denunciation of abuses alone is not enough. Organization, civic resistance, and coordination of political actions are needed. The people gave their message on 6 November, but this message must be defended every day against attempts to undo it in other ways. (Continues on page 2)
