ALBANIA WITHOUT LIGHT

The energy crisis - a telling indicator of the general crisis in which the Albanian economy finds itself. Albania, which on 25 April 1991 also adopted market paths, by the end of 1994 had made the energy situation even more tragic. In the last three years, many experiments have been undertaken in the energy sector, but without results. The new government, formed after the March 1992 elections, promised a quick solution, but the country is experiencing long power cuts, especially in towns and villages. Instead of taking measures to increase production and rationalize consumption, investment in the electricity network has been neglected, while the shortage of fuel and spare parts has worsened the situation. According to specialists, faults in the lines, worn-out equipment, and lack of planning have created an unacceptable situation. Production enterprises are working at low rates, while the daily life of citizens is becoming increasingly difficult. In many areas, outages last for hours and families are forced to use alternative means for heating and lighting. This situation also affects schools, hospitals, and other public services. The cause is not only drought or lack of rainfall. The energy crisis is closely linked to the overall economic crisis, to managerial incompetence, and to the lack of a clear development policy. If immediate and long-term measures are not taken, the country risks facing even more serious social and economic consequences. Correspondent of “Voice of the People”
