THE RELEASE OF MR. NANO WOULD SERVE TO IMPROVE THE IMAGE OF ALBANIAN DEMOCRACY
Statement by the Albanian Helsinki Committee
In the statements made in recent days about the procedure for sentencing Fatos Nano, representatives of the executive branch have used hysterical and derogatory terms. This manner of speaking is at odds with the fact that, so far, in the case in question, the court rulings have been contested.
The AHC has reacted to the statements made by senior state officials, which, by going beyond their own purpose, have also affected the dignity of the convicted person. The Committee believes that instead of using offensive tones, it would be more reasonable to review the institutional way in which the case is being handled.
The AHC considers it necessary for political maturity and respect for fundamental human rights to be shown at this moment. In particular, there is a need for the climate of confrontation to be replaced with conciliatory language and a more careful legal approach.
The Albanian Helsinki Committee states that Mr. Nano’s release would help improve the image of Albanian democracy and would create a more favorable atmosphere for democratic developments in the country.

“Happy New Year” or happy price increases
SHKODER
Everywhere in the grocery shops of the city of Shkodra, as well as in the private market, significant price increases have been observed on the eve of the holidays. Traders justify this with shortages of goods and with rising supply costs, while citizens complain that wages and pensions cannot cover expenses.
According to observations made in recent days, the most commonly used consumer goods have become more expensive. This has caused broad dissatisfaction among buyers, who see the year-end holiday becoming increasingly difficult economically.
At some points of sale, vendors state that the new prices do not depend on them, but on the market and the supply chain. Meanwhile, consumers are calling for intervention to curb abuses.
