Statement by the Albanian Helsinki Committee In the statements made in recent days about the procedure for sentencing Fatos Nano, representatives of the executive branch have used hysterical and derogatory terms. This manner of speaking is at odds with the fact that, so far, in the case in question, the court rulings have been contested. The AHC has reacted to the statements made by senior state officials, which, by going beyond their own purpose, have also affected the dignity of the convicted person. The Committee believes that instead of using offensive tones, it would be more reasonable to review the institutional way in which the case is being handled. The AHC considers it necessary for political maturity and respect for fundamental human rights to be shown at this moment. In particular, there is a need for the climate of confrontation to be replaced with conciliatory language and a more careful legal approach. The Albanian Helsinki Committee states that Mr. Nano’s release would help improve the image of Albanian democracy and would create a more favorable atmosphere for democratic developments in the country. Yesterday in the early hours of the day, at the meeting of the Parliamentary Commission on Mass Media and Culture, a vote was taken to dismiss RTSH Director General Mr. Skënder Fuga.
