THE UNION BARONS
- Around 180 former trade-union properties have been given over to the unions as property
- The “Il Skllavijë” building, worth around 750 million lek, has been rented out to a company for 600 dollars
- In another rented property that has remained in Albania, the union leaders are in a sorry state

As is the democratic government, a current of the time has completely left the fate of a man in his hands, a man whose exploitation of various bodies even the current government has not been able to curb, let alone the trade unions. Instead of taking a firm reformist stance, the current government has also given him free rein to act. What stands out is that the union leaders have been placed in such a position that they are little short of being called true pashas, and thanks to the “reform” they have been equipped with every possible privilege.
From the exploitation of their properties, including hotels, holiday homes, campsites, tourist centers, etc., they reap staggering sums. Instead of such assets being treated as social property and put at the service of workers, in many cases they have been rented out under scandalous conditions or used for purely private purposes.
In the Council of Ministers decision of December 1992, later clarified by other decisions, around 204 properties, including hotels, holiday homes, dormitories, holiday camps and production enterprises, were transferred to trade-union organizations. This vast wealth, created over the years by the labor and sweat of workers, is being managed in such a way that it has brought huge profits to a handful of people.
A blatant case is that of the “Iliria” holiday home in Durrës, which according to published data has a value of around 750 million lek and has been rented for the ridiculous amount of 600 dollars a month. This is a clear example of the way in which the properties that should have been at the service of workers are being misused.
Many union leaders have created a luxurious lifestyle, completely detached from the everyday worries of workers. They travel, use cars and enjoy privileges that have nothing to do with the mission they should have had. Instead of defending the interests of the working classes, they have turned into little masters of property and privilege.
This situation calls for immediate intervention and full transparency regarding all assets of the former trade unions and the way they have been rented out or used. Only thus can misuse be stopped and the meaning of social property restored.
