Editorial Throughout Albania the local branches of the Socialist Party are holding meetings, and the main point for everyone, discussion and conclusions, is that whenever the elections are decreed, the socialists will win them. Although Berisha has the proverbial “no” stuck in his throat for socialists, the SP is convinced that the course of Albanian developments runs in the direction of his wishes and dictates. In this enthusiastic atmosphere that pervades the activities of the SP, there are people who honestly ask: have you started the election campaign too early? Since this is openly in the nature of socialists, we answer: the Socialist Party has been forced to be in campaign mode all the time. It has been Berisha's government, which since 22 March 1993 has acted not as a ruling power but as a destructive opposition, always maintaining a campaign spirit with quarrels, slander, tension and the elimination of opponents, with the exposure of hostile groups and with a divisive spirit in all the other political forces. These far from democratic positions have forced us to compact our ranks, preserve and increase enthusiasm, set clear and convincing objectives, and fight to win the heart of every person, not only the wavering but also those who, because of prejudice from the past, were in opposition to us. The Socialist Party is not a political force that lies idle for four years in a row and wakes up when the votes run out. It is Berisha himself who, by realizing it, has done a great service to the SP and its alternative. (continued on page 3)
