The road to Kosovo “passes” through Israel
Our comment
The road to Kosovo “passes” through Israel
In these days the whole world experienced with pain the death of the Prime Minister of Israel, Itzhak Rabin, Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The emotion over this tragic death, following a terrorist attack by an Israeli right-wing extremist, is also very great in Albania, because here too Mr. Rabin has been recognized as one of the great architects of the peace that is now “sprouting” in the Middle East, one of the most troubled regions in today’s world.
But Albanians have honored Mr. Rabin for another reason as well - in his great example and that of the Israelis and Arafat in finding a common language of dialogue between two millennia-old enemies, they have seen the outline of a perspective for finding a language of dialogue also for us, with the traditional enemies of Albanians, as the Serbs are considered. So the peace established with great effort in the Middle East is the great example of the path that must be followed in order to establish peace also in the highly troubled Balkans, including its south, and even to create new relations among the Albanians themselves who have lived on these lands for millennia.
As if by coincidence, on these same days when Mr. Rabin was killed, the Albanian nation lost a great and bright figure such as Prof. Anton Çela, who has entered the modern history of Albanians as a prophet of reconciliation.
The world honors outstanding people. Yesterday Mr. Rabin was escorted to his final resting place in Jerusalem by nearly one million people. Among those attending his funeral ceremony were many distinguished personalities from all countries of the world. There was also the President of the Republic of Albania, Mr. Sali Berisha.
The question arises: Should the President of the Republic have gone to Jerusalem? We say without any doubt that such “acts” add value not only to the person in question, but also honor Albania. So Mr. Berisha should have gone, just as he did, to Mr. Rabin’s funeral ceremony.
But representatives of the Albanian state, including President Berisha himself, would have needed to attend another ceremony as well, a more difficult one, at Anton Çela’s funeral. Professor Çela, for us Albanians, is a symbol of unity, reconciliation, peace, he is the “noble man” among Albanians.

Condolence telegram from the Socialist Party of Albania
Tirana, 5.11.1995
Mr. Shimon Perez,
Tel Aviv-Israel
With deep sorrow we learned of the murder of the Labor Prime Minister of Israel, the esteemed Itzhak Rabin, a politician of world stature. He was a wise politician who correctly understood, and at the right time, the need for the peace process with the Palestinians and who, with his undisputed personality, achieved admirable results. The Israeli-Palestinian agreements signed recently, also with the mediation of the USA and President Clinton, made Mr. Rabin a great man of peace who deserves the Nobel Prize and recognition as a true hero of peace.
The far-right extremist forces took the life of Mr. Rabin at an extremely important and climactic moment in the peace process. In these difficult moments for the people of Israel, we Albanian socialists express our deepest and most sincere condolences to you, Mr. Shimon Perez, to the Rabin Movement and his family, to the Labourites and to all the people of Israel, as well as our firm conviction that the Israeli Labourites will continue the noble peace work of Mr. Rabin.
Sincere greetings
Deputy Chairman of the Socialist Party of Albania
Dr. Servet Pëllumbi
