The PD's greed with the people's sweat

The grand council in Durrës Who are the new land barons of Durrës? — 11 families from the Durrës government with more than 7,000 m² of built "estates" have villas rented out for 10–20 thousand new lekë a day to foreign tourists. — 72 other families with 21,000 m² of construction have recently been granted land legalization documents. Time has its carpets, its heads, its responsibilities. Such heads, as it seems, want to be local and peripheral. More specifically, not central. Stars, but local ones, so that those who trample the devil honestly, in a word, may do whatever they want. The same has happened in Durrës, where the system of construction and land occupation has turned into a major source of profit for a handful of people. Several well-known names from the past and present administration, linked to local government, are mentioned as direct beneficiaries. In this climate, ordinary citizens see public land, the beach and open spaces being seized and divided up for private interests. According to the information gathered, among those involved are administration officials, representatives of local bodies and people close to the ruling party. In a long list of names and plots, a scheme of appropriation of public property clearly emerges. Uncontrolled construction, tourist villas, shops and service facilities have been built on state land or on areas acquired through dubious documents. Residents of the area state that for many ordinary families land has become inaccessible, while for the chosen few it has become a profitable commodity. In this context, the question is: who are the new land barons of Durrës? The answer requires investigation and transparency. Public opinion has the right to know who received these areas, by what decisions and on what legal basis. If officials and people close to them turn out to be beneficiaries, then we are dealing with a serious scandal of abuse of power and common property. (To be continued on page 2)

AT WHAT PRICES HAVE THESE ASSETS BEEN BOUGHT?

AT WHAT PRICES HAVE THESE ASSETS BEEN BOUGHT? As can be seen, not only the lists, but also the way land and property were allocated has favored a certain group of people. In many cases the prices are ridiculous and do not match the real value of the assets. The examples brought by correspondents and the complaints of residents speak of a dark and unjust process.

PHARE Program for Albanian healthcare

Painted and miserable, the hospital system continues with the same drastic repertoire. The most urgent need for our healthcare system is financial and organizational support. The PHARE program is expected to bring equipment, medicines and technical assistance for hospitals and clinics. Part of the funds will be used for reconstruction, while the rest will go to staff training and the supply of basic materials. Healthcare facilities lack simple diagnostic equipment, medicines and consumables. Doctors and nurses face difficult working conditions every day. Foreign aid is considered an important support to stop the further degradation of the healthcare service. (To be continued on page 7)

What will come out of the Selami-Berisha clash?

The unrest is of a crushing kind, and the internal conflicts within the ruling party have entered a new phase. Supporters of one side and the other appear in different ways, while public opinion waits to learn how far the split will go. Selami is mentioned as a figure seeking a more institutional profile, while Berisha is seen as the center of decision-making and political control. Their clash, according to observers, may produce consequences not only for the Democratic Party, but also for governance as a whole. It may affect relations with the administration, with local structures and with allies. If the conflict deepens, a redistribution of roles or a shift in internal balances is not excluded. Lost youth on the roads of exile

So small, and the devil, it is said, appears with little potatoes, and movement sheds tears, one companion doing deeds to another.
