Instead of condemning acts of violence and seeking peaceful and democratic solutions, the PD's statement appears as an attempt to manipulate public opinion and conceal its own responsibilities in creating a climate of insecurity. The opposition sends European messages every day[?] The Albanian Assembly and government should be concerned and respond seriously to yesterday's declaration by the Council of Europe, which directly and without any ambiguity expresses serious reservations about the state of human rights, the rule of law and the functioning of democratic institutions in our country. This declaration is particularly important not only because of its content, but also because of the moment in which it is made, on the eve of the examination of Albania's application for admission to this pan-European body. Instead of giving reassuring signs and demonstrating commitment to European standards, the government continues to pursue a confrontational course with the opposition, the independent press and civil society organizations. This behavior does not help at all to create a climate of trust; on the contrary, it damages Albania's image abroad. If Albania wants to become part of European institutions, it must prove in practice that it respects fundamental freedoms, political pluralism and the independence of the judiciary. Propagandistic declarations are not enough. Europe requires concrete proof that the state does not use power against political opponents and that citizens enjoy equal protection before the law.
