Albanians are now detached not only spiritually, but also politically, from the past
- Interview with PSSH chairman Fatos Nano, given from Bënça Prison, Tepelenë, to Radio BBC -
Since I heard it for the second time last week, I am republishing this interview, calling it such, because it is a direct conversation with BBC journalist Mr. Jonathan Steele. By doing this I am fulfilling an obligation to the reader, and at the same time a journalistic and political debt to Fatos Nano, by opening the pages of the newspaper not only to him as chairman of the PSSH, but also as one of the important protagonists of Albanian politics. This interview, like the first one published in this newspaper, contains not only facts and events, but also thoughts, convictions and judgments, which do not claim to be the only ones, but in every case testify to the determination and maturity of a personality in Albanian politics, worthy of respect and attention. What makes the present conversation with Mr. Nano even more interesting is the fact that it took place after the decision of the Court of Cassation, which left Mr. Nano in prison, and on the eve of the local elections, an important and difficult moment for our country. In my opinion, the interview is of interest because, on the one hand, it helps us understand some things about Albanian politics more correctly, and also because it leads you to the convincing argument that Mr. Nano's removal from the political scene, by those who are keeping him in prison, is politically motivated and not legally motivated. On the one hand truth triumphs, though much later than it should, but right does not always stand on the same side as truth. This is the drama of his life and of democracy. Albert Zholi. Albania is now moving. In this movement, one can notice a detachment of Albanians, not only spiritually, but also politically, from the past. I think an emancipatory process is taking place. I am speaking in a broader sense than the upcoming elections and the referendum. For example, Berisha is afraid to change the judiciary. He does this in the name of anti-communism, but in fact he fears the action of the law. These are different concepts. It is clear that many communists have changed. It seems to me that there is a spontaneous reaction of people against the old establishment, although this establishment has changed its shape. It is heading toward inevitable defeat. A new sense of freedom and human dignity has been created, which has found expression in changes in the way of thinking. Albania cannot remain a hostage of the past. We must move toward a legal and democratic state, with independent institutions. (Continues on page 5)

PRILLI invites us to mutual understanding without prejudice
- Interview with the chairman of the Socialist Party KD for the Shkodër district, Sadadin Braha -
People are freeing themselves from prejudice and seeing that the solution to the many problems they have cannot be achieved without the democrats. They attach importance to dialogue. That pleases me. At least now there is a calmer and more realistic climate. If things are handled wisely, conditions for cooperation can be created. The residents of the area are tired of conflicts and want concrete solutions. The Socialist Party must be open and find common ground with everyone. Shkodër needs development, not political quarrels.
