THE SOCIALIST PARTY WILL JUSTIFY THE CONFIDENCE OF THE PEOPLE WHO HOPE FOR ITS SOON-TO-COME GOVERNMENT

Yesterday at the first Active meeting of the PD, after the end of the second Conference, Mr. Berisha declared, for the first time, that the Socialist administration will leave through the vote of the people. This statement deserves attention from everyone, especially from us socialists, because it expresses a new political fact. It is not that we had believed we would come to power through some abnormal form, but because now it is this one-sided administration that considers rotation through the vote possible. Until yesterday, Mr. Berisha presented all the opposition's efforts for power as unconstitutional, as coups and adventures, whereas now he is indirectly admitting that the removal of the Socialists can be done through voting. We are not even dwelling on any claimed change in the old convictions of the PD leader, knowing that in essence he remains the same. However, the fact that he is expressing this conviction must be taken into account. Because it comes at a moment when the right wing feels politically and morally crushed, when public opinion is weary of authoritarianism, abuse of the state, corruption and poverty. Likewise, his statement sounds like a tacit admission that power is not eternal. The Socialist Party has said and repeats that it seeks power only through the free vote of Albanians. But at the same time, it is aware that this vote must be won through work, through a program, through organization, through direct contact with people and not with empty slogans. People's trust is won through honesty, dedication and the ability to offer real solutions to their problems. In this sense, the hope people place in a nearby Socialist government is also a great responsibility for us. If part of public opinion sees the Socialist Party as an alternative, this is linked to the failures of the current government, but that alone is not enough. We must prove every day that we are better, more measured, more democratic and closer to the interests of the majority. We have no right to betray this expectation. We must justify people's trust, deserve it, turn it into political and moral force. This means that at all levels of our organization there must be more responsibility, more democratic discipline, more work with the masses, more openness toward intellectuals, young people, women and working people. Every structure of the Socialist Party must be alive, active and closely connected with the community. Only in this way will the hope for our near government take on a credible form. In the end, we do not rejoice in the slips of our opponents, but we learn from them. The Albanian people need cleaner politics, a fairer state, institutions that respect the law and the citizen. If the Socialist Party knows how to listen to the people and act in line with their interests, then it will not only win trust, but justify it with its near government.

IN THE GULF OF HATRED

The latest “victim” of the “PD” is the free press Written by: Ismail KADARE Tirana The final death of the language of hatred toward the right has led some people to think that after it a calmer climate may be created. But in reality the opposite is happening. What is being seen is that the language of hatred, kept alive for years on end, has not died down at all. On the contrary, it has shifted, become more refined, but no less dangerous. Its latest target is the free press. In a society that claims to be democratic, the free press must not only be protected, but also respected. Instead, in Albania it is happening that newspapers and journalists are attacked, slandered, intimidated and prejudged. This is not a small professional issue. It is an alarm for democracy itself. A system that does not accept criticism and treats different opinion as an enemy naturally slips toward arbitrariness. When power begins to hate the free word, it has already entered the gulfs of hatred toward society. This climate does not produce order, but fear; it does not produce stability, but forced silence. In this sense, the defense of the free press is not only in journalists' interest. It is in the interest of citizens, of institutions, of the state itself. Because the free press is the means through which society sees itself, corrects mistakes, exposes abuses and prevents power from turning into a cult. Albania needs calm, but not the calm of cemeteries. It needs free debate, civilized disagreement and a press that does not submit to fear. Every attack against the free word is a step against the country's democratic future. (Continues on page 3)

Residents complain that the water supply is scarce and irregular, which is making daily life more difficult. Declining development Industrial production funds are missing. According to some statistical indicators, industry is not being revived as was predicted. In many enterprises production has fallen, bringing unemployment and uncertainty about the future.
