Socialists call for a social pact, Berisha’s regime is heightening tensions with police adventures

STATEMENT By the leadership of the Socialist Party of Albania The situation in Albania is worsening dramatically. It is moving toward that part of the economic and political demand which, although all kinds of expressions and theses are now circulating, has not been taken seriously by anyone. Words such as devaluation, destruction of property, rising unemployment, increasing tension in daily life, shrinking freedom of speech, and strengthening of the arbitrariness of power are becoming more and more common every day. The current government is failing in the face of its basic duties. Instead of real solutions to unemployment, the deep social crisis, and the easing of tensions, it is resorting to propaganda, intimidation, and police violence. This aggravated situation is no accident. It is linked to the way the current regime has been built and functions. The Socialist Party of Albania considers that the country needs a social pact, political dialogue, and real guarantees of democratic freedoms. Without such an agreement, Albania risks entering a new spiral of conflict, impoverishment, and destabilization. In recent days, police interventions, pressure on the opposition, and attempts to create an atmosphere of insecurity have increased. These police adventures solve no problem; on the contrary, they deepen the crisis and move the country away from institutional normality. The Socialist Party calls on all political forces, social organizations, and citizens to contribute to easing tensions, defending rights, and finding a political and social solution in the country’s interest. TIRANË. As soon as parliament sounded the alarm over the protest by students from the law department, socialist deputies were attacked at the SHIK rostrum by the deputy from the capital, Mr. Hajdari. Arrogant in name and fierce in expression, with coarse language and a defiant tone, he attacked the Socialist Party with insults and threats. In his response, Mr. Hajdari used offensive words and portrayed the socialists as instigators of tension, while himself defending a climate of confrontation and political ambushes. According to him, the opposition should not demand a social pact, but should remain silent in the face of violence and arbitrariness. This behavior was described as another sign of the degradation of political debate and the use of hate speech in state institutions. (continued on page 9)
