Socialist Party
- Interview with the vice-chairman of the SP - comrade NAMIK DOKLE,
given to our journalist Ardian Myslimi -
Question: You have just returned from the Europe meeting, where the forum of the
conditions of the political left wing of the continent was just held, where the economic and political trends of our country were discussed, but especially the problems of Albania's political development. The press has also commented on the broad debate concerning Euro-Atlantic structures, the idea of social democracy and the link between the Albanian left and the processes of European integration. Can you tell us something more concrete about these developments?
Namik Dokle: The forum was held in Brussels and in this forum left-wing forces from different countries of Europe took part. The talks were useful not only for the exchange of views, but also for a proper understanding of the positions held by left-wing forces on developments in Europe and in particular in Albania. I think that the Albanian Socialist Party has gained valuable support in all these processes, because it remains a responsible political force, which stands for democracy, the rule of law and the integration of the country into Euro-Atlantic structures.
Question: Was this support purely political, or are there also practical elements that allow you to call this a real rapprochement?
Namik Dokle: Not only political support. The willingness to cooperate with us in many areas has been clearly expressed, such as in preparing programs, in assistance with contacts with international institutions, and in exchanging parliamentary and party experience. This shows that the Albanian Socialist Party is no longer seen as an isolated force, but as a natural part of the modern European left.
Question: What is your position on the relations between European integration and Euro-Atlantic structures?
Namik Dokle: For us these processes are not separate. Albania needs security, stability and development, and these cannot be achieved without closer ties with Europe and without establishing stable relations with Euro-Atlantic structures. For precisely this reason the Albanian Socialist Party considers this political vision a long-term strategic orientation.
Question: What do you expect on the domestic political level after these contacts?
Namik Dokle: We expect that in Albania too it will be better understood that the modern left is not a step backward, but an advanced alternative for the state, for a market economy with social sensitivity, and for the country's inclusion in the European family. This is our path.

The lifting of the embargo from Albania in the focus of the UN

A puzzle to close the traces of steel from Albania in
Montenegro
The time for the end of the sanctions
against Serbia, it seems,
is approaching. It is expected that
next week the UN Security
Council will put on the agenda the issue of lifting the
embargo on Belgrade. It is known
that Albania has been one of the coun-
tries that has implemented the UN sanctions against Serbia with the greatest strictness.
This was also acknowledged by Mr. Carl Bildt,
representative of the European Union,
when he came to Tirana a short
time ago. But on the other hand, Albania
has been accused of violating the embar-
go. In fact, more than once
fabricated statements and news have been
spread about the smuggling of oil and
other goods through Albanian territory.
The responsibilities for these accusations, as
well as for the interests that have
fueled them, have been the object of scrutiny
in international bodies. Through
control mechanisms, Albania
has shown that it has cooperated with
the UN and with its missions in
a continuous manner. Nevertheless,
the slanders have not stopped.
The same is confirmed by a
passage from a document, which our newspaper
has in its possession. There it says that the ship? [?] recently inspected by the
control services has been clear in assessing the smuggling routes. According to this document,
the Albanian route was not the main supply route for Montenegro or for Serbia with oil. On the contrary,
there were other transport lines
that avoided the attention of
international control.
The rest of the document focuses
in particular on the methods used to
hide the origin of the goods and on the role of ports and intermediate
points. In this context,
Albania appears more as a transit country,
rather than as a center for organizing these activities.
In the end, the document suggests
that part of the noise made against
Albania was politically motivated as well.
For this reason, putting the issue in the focus of the UN may
also serve to clarify once and for all the real responsibilities and to
close the slanders used against
our country.
