Tribute to May 5, the Day of the Martyrs

TIRANA
As part of efforts to intensify political and social activity on the eve of the local elections of 26 May, the Socialist Party of Albania held a meeting yesterday in Tirana with veterans, invalids, families of martyrs and former political persecuted persons. The event was attended by the chairman of the PSSH, Mr. Servet Pëllumbi, the secretary-general of this party, Mr. Rexhep Meidani, the secretary for social policy issues, Mrs. Vito Kapo, leaders of the PS Youth Forum and other representatives of the party.
After briefly reviewing the political and economic situation, Mr. Servet Pëllumbi said that freedom, independence, peace and democracy cannot be true expressions of the human ideal without ensuring welfare and social justice. Assessing the transition period, he said that some consequences of the past have still not been overcome. Such attitudes are reflected in the obstacles placed before the Albanian people in enjoying a free and dignified life, such as the prolonged property crisis, the land issue and unemployment, that is, problems that continue to trouble many Albanian families. He stressed that democracy cannot be only a vote every four years, but active participation and civic responsibility in the life of the country. In this context, broad social solidarity and respect for the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for the freedom of the country are required.
In his speech, Mr. Pëllumbi also pointed out the need for better cooperation between generations, for preserving the values of anti-fascism and for establishing a climate of tolerance and understanding. He said that pluralism should not turn into hostility, but into civic competition of ideas and programs. In this sense, he stressed that the country needs stability, work and the rule of law.
Representatives of veterans, invalids, families of martyrs and former political persecuted persons also spoke at the meeting, expressing their concerns about economic and social treatment, recognition of contributions and improvement of the legislation related to their status. More attention was requested from state institutions and a more dignified treatment for these strata.

May 6 has forever been a commemoration of one of the most important events of the LANÇ and of our people. In this context, a meeting was organized yesterday in Korçë with veterans and families of martyrs, attended by representatives of local government and the Socialist Party. In his speech Servet Pëllumbi dwelt on the meaning of the sacrifice of the martyrs and on the role that historical memory plays in civic education.
He stressed that such anniversaries should not be used for momentary propaganda, but for social reflection. Referring to the reality of the country, he said that facades are often raised to make the euphoria of deception seem credible, while many problems remain unresolved. According to him, citizens are asking for work, security, dignity and an administration that responds to their concerns.
In his conversation with journalists he pointed out that the Socialist Party remains committed to free and fair elections and to governance that respects the law. He added that Albanian society needs dialogue, not division, and institutions that earn the public's trust through transparency and accountability.
