The problem of clandestines is a problem of Albania, not of Albanians. It concerns extra Albanians
Speaks Mr. Palo Qorresi, Ambassador of the Republic of Italy in Tirana
- Mr. Ambassador, how do you consider yesterday's measures by the Italian authorities, and were the actions of the shipping companies and travel agencies justified? - I think two distinctions must be made. The first concerns the measures taken by the Italian government, meaning police activities and the reinforcement of maritime control in Vlorë and Durrës by Italian military forces. These are measures taken in an emergency situation, which naturally constitutes a problem for Italy and Albania. We must be aware that the large and continuous flows of Albanian emigrants toward Italy, arriving and departing without control, constitute a serious risk both to public order and to their lives. I believe that for some time now the Italian government and public transport means have made it clear that irregular journeys cannot be tolerated. - You suggested that a distinction can be made between clandestines and those who travel with documents? - Certainly. Italy is interested in having regular relations with Albania and with its citizens. There are Albanians who come to Italy with proper documents, for work, for family reasons, or for other lawful motives. Clandestines, however, are something else. These are people who set out without respecting the rules and often fall prey to traffickers. - So is the problem Albania's or the Albanians'? - I think it is a problem of Albania, not of Albanians as a nation. We are talking about certain economic and social circumstances that push part of the population toward illegal emigration. It would not be right to identify the entire Albanian people with the phenomenon of clandestines. - Some Italian circles have shown racist tones toward Albanians. What do you think? - I do not want to generalize. In Italy there is great sensitivity and concern over uncontrolled migration, but there are also many people and institutions that know the sacrifices of Albanians and that are against any form of racism. - What solution do you see? - There must be close cooperation between the two countries, better border control, a fight against traffickers and, at the same time, legal paths for movement and employment. Only in this way can tension be avoided and a sound relationship between Italy and Albania be preserved.
Clandestines and armies on stamps, or seasonal employment and stability with Italy?
- Albanian diplomacy should turn the challenges of Italian deputies into a draft law on seasonal employment. - Racism against Albanians? Albania saved the Christianity of Europe.
Albanians their officials:
It continues forcefully in the information, comments, proposals, accusations, media war and the Italian parliamentarians' campaign to pressure the Rome government to send the military fleet to the Albanian coasts or to definitively wipe out Albanian emigration, which is devouring Italy. Of course, these first signals of a trade blockade with Italy, which makes it harder for Albanians to be supplied with goods, are being triggered by democratic and anti-mafia forces in Italy, but at the same time they signal that they too are waiting for the most favorable moment to carry out their plans. The Italian prime minister, one day before leaving for a visit to Rome, declared that the organizers of clandestine groups would be struck with all the severity of the state. According to him, the Italian government is interested in solving the issue of migration in all its dimensions. Criticizing the Italian military force present on the Otranto coast, he emphasized that a lasting solution must be found. In this context, the Italian prime minister invited the Albanian authorities to cooperate actively in stopping the illegal trafficking of people. According to comments in the Italian press, the proposed measures against Albanian emigration are being accompanied by a wave of accusations and racist stereotypes. Also raised in the debate was the idea of approving a draft law on the seasonal employment of Albanians in Italy, as an alternative to illegal emigration. Albanian diplomacy should support this initiative and seek legal paths to employment for Albanian citizens. Albania cannot be treated only as a source of clandestine emigrants; it is a European country with a history, culture and a special role in the defense of Christian civilization in Europe.
The chief is making things happen - MP Balla has brought out the other side
For yesterday's June 2 summit, two sessions on the issue of pensions had been planned. From yesterday morning the session presidency requested the presentation of the agenda. MP Balla, engaged in debate, asked that opposition representatives not be given the floor. For this reason a tense situation was created in the hall. Subsequently, an amendment related to the procedure for considering the draft law was put to a vote. Opposition MPs protested, describing this as a violation of the rules of procedure. The session was interrupted several times and continued amid heated debate.
