Extraordinary meeting of the leadership of the Socialist Party and the editorial board of the newspaper “Zëri i Popullit” Members of the leadership and journalists of “Zëri i Popullit” held an extraordinary meeting last night, after the scandal that occurred with yesterday’s issue of “Zëri i Popullit”, which was barbarically censored by the police and the power’s mercenaries. Describing this unprecedented act as a political aggression against the opposition and the free press, the leadership of the PS and the staff of “Zëri...” called it a major alarm for Albanian democracy. They called on public opinion to react strongly and condemn this arbitrary, unlawful and unconstitutional act. The leadership of the Socialist Party declares that this act takes place on the eve of the elections and aims to intimidate the opposition press and silence the truth. According to the speakers, those responsible for this scandal must face the law and public opinion. It was emphasized that grave injustice has been done to the newspaper and that this shows the dramatic state of freedom of expression in the country. The participants expressed their determination for “Zëri i Popullit” to continue its informational and denunciatory mission. DECLARATION of the leadership of the Socialist Party of Albania

The very essence of democracy is incompatible with censorship and violence against the press. The act of interference yesterday with the newspaper issue of “Zëri i Popullit” is a severe blow against pluralism, against freedom of speech and against the public’s right to information. The leadership of the Socialist Party strongly condemns this act and calls on all political forces, civil society and the democratic opinion to react without delay. This event proves that the political climate is worsening and that power is using methods of pressure and intimidation against the opposition. We demand that the authors and those who ordered this action be held legally accountable. We guarantee that the Socialist Party will firmly defend the right to information and the fundamental democratic freedoms.[?]
