- President Clinton in Albania? - the future of Albania’s president The President of the UN General Council and of the Committee on International Relations of the US House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Xhylman, accompanied by Congressman Eliot Engel, gave a press conference yesterday at the premises of the Socialist Party headquarters, where he was received by its chairman, Mr. Servet Pëllumbi. They spoke about the importance of expanding bilateral relations between Albania and the USA, about the situation in Albania and the region, and about the need to respect democracy, human rights and international standards. During the meeting, dialogue with the opposition political forces was assessed as very useful, and it was emphasized that Albania’s European perspective is closely linked to internal democratic developments. On this anniversary of the Socialist Party The return of the Socialist Party today, with the strength of its authority and the real support of broad sections of the people, and its secure perspective toward them thanks to its increasingly greater political and ideological emancipation as a parliamentary opposition force, as a force that is winning and awakening the growing hopes of the majority of the Albanian people, as a force that stands unwavering in defense of the democratic rights and freedoms of our entire people, as a force defending the country’s true national and social values, as a beloved social force, makes it understandable that it has entered a new stage of consolidation, of strengthening its identity, of its ideological and organizational consolidation as such, as a mature political and parliamentary force, as a democratic force with clear visions and programs for the present and the future, in line with the demands of the country’s march toward Europe. In this new stage of its development, it is of course important not only to preserve and further strengthen the authority gained in electoral and parliamentary confrontations, but also to raise itself to higher levels of political, programmatic and organizational emancipation and modernization in order to respond as well as possible to the challenges ahead. Thus, this party is clear and determined to fully understand and master, in concept and in culture, its entire modernization and reform. This is the necessary condition for becoming a powerful and irreplaceable factor in the political and social life of the country. On this basis and within the framework of its responsibilities for the country’s future governance, the Socialist Party is deepening and enriching ever more its profile as a democratic and reformist left-wing political force, which aims at lasting progressive transformations in the economic, political and social spheres, within the framework of political pluralism, the market economy and European integration. In these conditions, in order to respond to the demands of the time and the concrete needs of Albanian society, it is necessary for it to affirm more strongly its traits as a modern party, with a broad democratic culture, a contemporary spirit, and clear reformist and social-democratic conceptions. This also implies the struggle against any conservatism, any dogmatic residue, any primitive political mindset or prejudice that would hinder it from moving at the pace of the times. The democratic socialism sought by the Socialist Party has nothing in common with the failed models of the past; it is linked to building a rule-of-law state, a functional democracy, an efficient economy with a social orientation, and an open and solidaristic society. Comrade ANTON KOÇI, chairman of the Socialist Party of Albania. The Socialist district leadership, in cooperation with the local organizations of the PSH in the Vlora district, is organizing a warm reception for the veteran teacher, distinguished activist and patriot Anton Koçi, on the occasion of his 90th birthday and his return to the homeland. Although advanced in age, his political, family and social life and activities are of great interest to public opinion, especially for the younger generation and the PSH organizations. Comrade Anton Koçi’s work is linked to the city and district of Vlora. For many years he contributed to the progress of education and teaching in this region. Tirana, 10 June 1995

With regard to the issue of the nation, in SHSH it is noted that the Republic of Albania is going through an extremely critical period and the situation has been deteriorating. Since 1992 our country has suffered a dramatic decline in living standards, a rise in unemployment, a weakening of state institutions and the legal order, as well as a climate of fear and public insecurity. FOURTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE PS On the occasion of the 4th anniversary of the founding of the PSSH, the leadership of the PS branch in the Gjirokastra district held a meeting with representatives of several basic organizations in the city and with the membership. The meeting was attended by members of the district leadership, representatives of the youth, and veterans of the socialist movement.
