The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has not voted against the “NANO case”

STRASBURG The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has not voted against the “NANO case” - Declares at the press conference the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Miguel Angel Martínez. - Mr. NANO's case is a matter that concerns us... ...it can be said that the proceedings against Fatos Nano had some political elements and some anti-journalistic elements. Since the day before yesterday, the Chairman of the Socialist Party of Albania, Mr. Servet Pëllumbi, who heads the Albanian delegation, has been working in Strasbourg at the permanent meeting of the presidium of the Socialist International and the chairmen of the socialist and social-democratic groups of the member states of the Council of Europe. At yesterday's session of the presidium, among other things, the Secretary-General of the Socialist International, Mr. Luis Ayala, announced that a resolution on the Albanian issue is being prepared. Likewise, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Miguel Angel Martínez, during yesterday's press conference, declared: "The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has not voted against the NANO case. This is a matter that concerns us, Mr. NANO's case. We believe that Mr. NANO's case is an important matter of human rights and a matter of democracy. But we have not voted against Albania. We have voted for democracy, for human freedoms, for a democratic, pluralist system, for a rule-of-law state, for respect for human rights, a respect for legal matters and for respect for the person." He also expressed his own opinion that "Mr. NANO's case is a very important matter. Personally, I think that it has political and legal elements. This case should not be viewed from only one side; it must be seen in its entirety, it must be viewed with humanity, the rehabilitation of Mr. Nano's figure must be carried out, he must no longer continue to be treated as guilty, above all, the issue of Mr. Nano's freedom must be resolved as quickly as possible. In this I agree with the statement just made by Mr. Luis Ayala. This matter must certainly continue to be dealt with within the Commission on Human and Legal Rights, but bearing in mind that the most important thing is the need for Mr. Nano's freedom and the rehabilitation of his image."
