Jorge Sampaio
THE NEW SOCIALIST PRESIDENT OF PORTUGAL
The new socialist President of Portugal
Dear friend,
Your victory and that of the Portuguese Socialist Party, which you led as candidate in the presidential elections of 14 January 1996, were received with joy and enthusiasm by the hundreds of thousands of members and supporters of the Socialist Party of Albania, the largest opposition party in the country.
Allow me, on this joyful occasion, to convey to you and to the Portuguese Socialist Party my warmest friendly greetings.
Your convincing victory once again confirmed the value and fairness of the vote that the Portuguese electorate gave to the Socialist Party in last autumn’s parliamentary elections and the growing confidence in its alternatives. In this regard, we cannot fail to mention the valuable influence of Mr. Maroi Soarez, a respected personality not only in Portugal but also in the social-democratic movement. I take this opportunity to wish you and the Portuguese socialist government success and new achievements in leading and governing the country, for the good and prosperity of friendly Portugal. I also wish to express my conviction and confidence in the strengthening, in the future, of friendly and constructive relations between our two parties, on the basis of the finest values of democratic socialism, which we aspire to. With the highest esteem and consideration.
Dr. Servet Pëllumbi
Deputy Chairman of the Socialist Party of Albania
Tirana, 15 January 1996
