The Socialist Party deserves to win and will win

Closing speech by the deputy chairman of the Socialist Party Sokrat Pëllumbi Dear fellow delegates! The new leadership of our party and our candidate for prime minister will go out with dedication to every city, every village and every neighborhood to accomplish the objectives of the Second Congress of the Party together with the membership and with all the people. The successful congress of the Socialist Party will not remain a single moment closed in on itself. It must become part of the consciousness and determination of every socialist man and woman to strengthen the politics of popular force, of a political force with socialist leanings and social impartiality, of a force with broad interests that fights for social peace and for economic development and democratic progress. On this path, in order to successfully fulfill our historic mission, we will define as the fundamental direction of our political work the party’s daily contact with the masses. The best way to win the hearts and minds of our simple people, of the people who suffer and need the warmth of solidarity, security and order, and to create confidence in a better future, is to know how to stay as close as possible to their troubles and concerns, to talk with suffering people and the unemployed, to help build mutual understanding and responsibility, to increase trust and hope. In order to successfully achieve these major objectives, we must necessarily be in continuous relations with all strata of the people. It is our duty to be the promoters of every activity that places the human being at its center. Therefore, the spirit of the Congress must be turned into a working program for the organizations at the center and at the base. Our Second Congress did not have, nor could it have had, a demonstrative or propagandistic character. Its purpose was clear and important. It had a primarily political and programmatic character and was historically and democratically charged. PS Chairman Fatos Nano, while assessing and making public the increased commitments of political contribution after the Congress, has issued several very valuable instructions and guidelines. The emphasis on the importance of cooperation among political forces, in addition to the political responsibilities of the PS, also expresses the civilized form of political thought. Our political activity must show maturity, culture and democratic civic spirit. There must be no place for bitterness, insults or revenge. Our task is to help create an atmosphere of understanding and responsibility in the interest of the country’s democratic future. I think this is one of the most important values of the Second Congress of the PS. On the basis of this orientation we must look beyond the walls of the Congress hall, beyond the boundaries of the organization and the party, and work so that our voice is heard everywhere. What must win is not only the party, but Albania. Our people need peace, law, work and a state that respects the citizen. In this sense, the Second Congress should be seen as a call for unity, for strengthening the organization and for placing the party in the service of the public interest. Chronicle

Proceedings of the second day of the Second Congress of the Socialist Party The Labour MP Richard Burden, one of the foreign guests present at the congress, was greeted by those present with a standing ovation. Burden spoke on behalf of the Labour Party and the Socialist International, highly praising the level of organization of the congress. “Democracy requires perspective and unity. I have come to wish you well for the progress of the Socialist Party and of your country,” said the British MP. The first to greet the congress delegates was the PUK deputy, Ahmet Haxhiu. Praising the close relations between Albanian socialists and social democrats, Haxhiu underlined that the Albanians of Kosovo consider the Socialist Party an important ally in support of their aspirations for national independence. During the second day of the congress’s plenary proceedings, discussions and greetings from the guests continued. In this context, the chairman of the Democratic Party, Agolli, who began his speech with the traditional greeting “Tungjatjeta,” which drew applause from those present, said that two volunteers for moving away from violence in our environment is an important step toward stability. He stated that “we need to secure public discourse, to give the citizen real safety and order.” Referring to the congress decisions, Agolli emphasized that the initiative for social democracy requires broad political understanding. On behalf of the Republican Party of Kosovo, the local parliamentarian and publicist, unclear[?], greeted the meeting, stressing the need for local cooperation. Along with the greetings from the foreign delegations, telegrams and messages from various political and social forces were also read. On page 2
