PSSH values the statement of the spokesperson of the American State Department, USA, regarding the Skopje - Wirth meeting PSSH yesterday received with particular interest the statement dated 2.08.1996 by the US press spokesperson, Mr. Nicholas Burns, regarding Saturday's meeting between the chairman of the PSSH, Mr. Rexhep Meidani, and the US Undersecretary of State, Richard Holbrooke, who in the meeting reiterated that the elections of 26 May were illegitimate and that the American government cannot consider Albania democratic or give it its support without progress in democracy being achieved in the country. PSSH is concerned about the official version of Friday's statement by the spokesperson of the US State Department, Mr. Glyn Davies, which, by removing the most important part of the statement on the crisis and the Skopje-Wirth meeting, creates a different opinion in our country and gives the impression that Washington is warning Albania. At the beginning of this week PSSH denounced this distortion of the statement in the print and electronic media, warning the wider public and the political parties in Albania that this is a manipulation involving the most distinctive features of the elections of 26 May.
