We emphasize Since its founding and ever since, the Socialist Party has had to confront not only violence and repression, not only political imprisonment and systematic persecution, but also subversion, slander, fabrications and all kinds of propaganda traps. The regime and its propaganda machine, placed entirely under the political orders of the party in power, have not ceased their subversive attacks, with the sole aim of confusing, factionalizing, dividing and destroying the PS—which would mean the destruction of pluralism in Albania. After the elections to local government bodies on October 20, when the General Steering Committee of the Socialist Party rightly initiated a broad analysis throughout the party as a whole, the subversive attacks by those in power became even more sophisticated and more intensive. To this end, they exploit people’s despair, their loss of faith in the free vote, and the situation that has arisen within the PS itself. But what happens? When Socialists should be more united than ever, when they should know how to recognize subversive language, they not infrequently fall prey to it, and even amplify it. For example, someone started saying that the Steering Committee of the PS in Tirana had supposedly begun collecting signatures for a motion of confidence in the leadership of the PSSH. Although the chairman of the PS in Tirana, Musa Ulqini, himself has denied this rumor, some Socialists come out asking whether it is true that signatures are being collected for a petition, and so on, when they should be the first not only to refute the rumor, but also to explain and convince the party membership about any uncertainties that may be a cause for concern. Likewise, someone speaks “with authority” of having seen X-former PS leaders or Y-PS leaders with Azem Hajdari in a Tirana café, and immediately some Socialists—those who show their activism only through café debates—rush to find the SHIK or Berisha agent in the ranks of the PS. Such cases are not few, and should not be ignored. Those in power are not going to tire of or withdraw from their game of subversion against the PS (all the more so when they see that it sometimes succeeds, as rumors take root); on the contrary, they will become even more aggressive. Therefore, we must know how to find our bearings; we must know how to clarify matters for ourselves and for others, so that we do not take for granted everything served up to us; we must also have great respect for one another’s work, especially when it is being orchestrated by compromised elements of those in power, so that we do not fall into their games, but know how to overcome the situation created after the elections within the solidarity coalition.
