Yesterday its leaders were the ones offering political and economic guarantees to the depositors of the foundations, declaring “borrowing” to be an “intimate and individual act.” Today the PD is removing its mask to put on another “mask”—that of the “saviour of the situation”—in order to save the people’s money. In the circumstances that have arisen, the state must take every measure to prevent the people’s money from being taken out of the country, as may also have happened before. The PSSH calls on all political forces, left and right, intellectuals, students, and the entire public to contribute to resolving the very difficult situation created by the PD’s bad government! Statement by the PSSH Presidium on resolving the pyramid-scheme crisis The PSSH demands: The resignation of the current government and the formation of a technical government of experts, with the consensus of a roundtable of all political parties convened specifically for this purpose. The Socialist Party has the following demands of this technical government: 1. It must restore normal conditions and address citizens’ legitimate claims concerning the pyramid schemes in accordance with the legislation in force, and in particular the law on bankruptcy procedures. To this end, it must administer, for the benefit of citizens, the funds and real estate of the bankrupt firms, with the assistance of the Creditors’ Committees as well. 2. The heads of the Central Bank and the second-tier state banks, who allowed activities outside banking supervision to take place within their jurisdiction, must be held criminally liable. 3. The state’s specialized bodies must audit and make public the amounts received by political parties, the state administration, banks, and through other sponsorships, and determine the misappropriated funds that must be returned for the benefit of citizens. 4. The interest on citizens’ deposits frozen in the firms’ bank accounts must be calculated and paid to them. 5. It must make it possible to draw up the state budget for 1997 and ensure the country’s financial administration.
