AT THE PSSH HEADQUARTERS As part of his on-the-ground activities as the direct representative of Austrian Chancellor Franz Vranicki, Ambassador Grubmajer met on the last day with PSSH Chairman Fatos Nano and its Secretary General Rexhep Mejdani. The interlocutors once again expressed their concern about the general crisis facing Albania and reaffirmed their willingness to contribute mutually to overcoming it. The June elections and their conduct in accordance with democratic norms and European standards were considered a decisive solution of particular importance for Albania. PSSH leaders assured Ambassador Grubmajer that, as they have done to date, the Socialists would continue to abide by the political agreement of 9 March and support the Government of National Reconciliation in fulfilling its mission. Yesterday, PSSH Chairman Fatos Nano and PSSH Secretary for Foreign Relations Maqo Lakrori met in Tirana with the Vice-Chairman of the Party of European Socialists and senior PASOK leader, Akis Xohaxopullos. During their discussion, they exchanged views on the political situation in Albania and, in particular, on preparations for holding free and fair elections in June 1997. They also discussed the further development of friendly relations between the PSSH and the PSE, as well as between the PSSH and PASOK. The meeting took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
