June 29—the day of the free vote, the people’s final break with Berisha’s dictatorship is going through the country. This is how about by the corrupt and criminal governance of the old regime. You will thus show that Albania has a future; you will choose the path of breaking away from Berisha’s dictatorship, opening the way to a democracy worthy of Albania and your families. I am sure that you will choose our alternative, the best one for rebuilding the state, restoring democratic institutions, developing free enterprise in all its forms, strengthening private property, ensuring law and order, and making you prosper through the fruits of your honest and lawful labor. We also have the intellectual and political potential to make Albania normal and European again—truly democratic, free and sovereign, on genuinely friendly terms with its neighbors, integrated into the Atlantic structures, and a factor for peace and stability in the Balkans and Europe. We, in cooperation with the progressive opposition, will close off the paths of corruption, crime, division and mistrust; we will put an end to political revenge and expand the space for freedom in every sphere of life. Foreign investment, Albania’s vast resources, and your energy and abilities—the three sure pillars of development, employment and your well-being—we will put at the service of your civic and national dignity. Message from the Chairman of the PSSH, Fatos Nano, addressed to the Albanian electorate The day of June 29 has arrived, when you will decide, with your free and responsible vote, how to resolve the severe crisis our country is going through. In this way, you will contribute to saving Albania from the catastrophe brought about by the regime’s corrupt and criminal rule, and we will put our full range of abilities to work. your legitimate and lawful aspirations, and we also have the intellectual and political potential to rebuild Albania as a normal and European country, truly democratic, free and sovereign, professionally capable, and recognizing and applying only the law. We are seriously committed to making use of every opportunity to secure special resources for the return and compensation of the money lost in the pyramid schemes. We will confiscate the money stolen by the old regime and give it to the people who were robbed. The Socialists enjoy firm support from the developed countries of Western Europe and the United States of America, and from the international organizations whose public positions in support of helping Albania rebuild are familiar to you. This is a guarantee that Albania will move forward securely as a democratic and European country. We have solemnly declared our commitment to broad-based social co-government, with the aim of achieving stability in Albania. The Chairman of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano, received at the PSSH headquarters a delegation of the European Democratic Union (EDU), headed by Aleksis Wintoniak, Executive Secretary. He noted the PS’s deep concern, expressed through its ongoing efforts to ensure that normal conditions are established everywhere for free, fair and equal elections—a key factor in stabilizing the country’s entire life. Speaking about these elections, he emphasized his confidence in the victory of the PS and the progressive opposition, as well as in the objectivity of the OSCE’s final report on these elections. At Berisha’s direct instigation and on his orders, the newspaper “Albania” has concocted the lie that the PSSH received $550,000 in financing from the Gjallica company. After his personal crisis, Berisha, with the reproductive instincts of a political epileptic, has produced his latest electoral lie—following Xhon Megou and the white steel of ’91, and the report by a mentally ill Italian journalist claiming that the PS was financed by Serbia’s PS. The official document proving that the whole thing was conceived and organized by the presidential office under Berisha’s own supervision has immediately reached the PSSH.
