ALBANIA IN A NEW LIGHT
The vote of 29 June and, in particular, the referendum on restoring the monarchy were central to the interest in monitoring and assessing the state of cooperation and the guarantee of standards of freedom. Over the last three months Albania has been drawn into a political trajectory different from the previous one. On 29 June Albanians expressed through their vote their orientation toward returning the country to the path of dialogue and democratization. These developments created a new basis for the institutionalization of political life and for restoring confidence in democratic processes. The referendum on the form of government was held in a heated political climate, but its result showed a clear majority in favor of the republic. This is of particular importance for the consolidation of the state and for bringing it closer to European standards.
