“Zëri i Popullit” 55 years
Tribune of free speech, a relay of civilization passed from generation to generation
We remember with respect and gratitude all our predecessor colleagues, who gave life and name to “Zëri i Popullit”, making it a laboratory for the school of journalism, as well as our collaborators from Albania and abroad
Tomorrow “Zëri i Popullit” turns 55. In many shades it writes important pages in our national history, remembers with nostalgia its own roots, and brings back memories, events and impressions of journalists, editors, proofreaders and typographers, as well as the many collaborators along its long road, with its ups and downs, its lights and shadows. Such is also the span of life of “Zëri i Popullit”, always closely tied to political events and situations, which it had to face with the strength of its spirit and its own words.
“Zëri i Popullit” is the party newspaper, founded and born from the anti-fascists and national liberation fighters even in the difficult circumstances of the Second World War. But in any case, it was not a conjunctural newspaper, created for a single event or a passing moment. From the outset, “Zëri i Popullit”, with its mission, had a clear aim, an ideal, now the only national one: strengthening the unity of the people, love of country, progress and the future, freedom, independence. Perhaps that is enough to understand why “Zëri i Popullit” has been an inseparable part of Albania’s destiny, a transmitter of ideas and of the spirit of the times and the stages it has passed through.
Its age also makes it clear that the newspaper has been an inseparable part of Albanian history. Or, put differently, it has become a witness of history. Through it, in its own language and style, with its concepts of open communication with the reader, the stages of the development of Albanian society have been reflected in certain periods, together with their socio-political and historical characteristics, and not only that. For 55 years, “Zëri i Popullit”, with its interests in politics, economics, culture and all Albanian life, has built a large political “notebook” of the people, bringing readers hope, knowledge, ideas and culture, as well as the newspaper’s historical mission.
Where do the duties of this newspaper lie, or do they end at all? Perhaps they are interrupted, divided, concluded with the day, week or month that changes. No, they are inseparable from time and from responsibility toward the people and the nation, toward a society that is opening the way to democratic, civic and Europeanizing values. “Zëri i Popullit” was born as a starting point of collective consciousness, as a mirror of the broad human world of a society that emerged from a difficult war and needed to be enlightened by the idea of citizenship and the creation of an emancipatory ideal. Together with its history and its thought, it created a sincere and direct relationship with the people. In essence, that has been the idea of “Zëri i Popullit”, and it remains just as precious today.
Above all, “Zëri i Popullit” has been and remains an institution of free speech, a tribune of plural thought, being a voice of independent dignity respected in all times and all circumstances. This means that, through its independent stance, the newspaper rose above ordinary clichés, knew how to grasp the developments of the time, became their chronicle, a representative of ideas and social thought, with the clearest message for freedom, progress and Albanian civilization. It always moves with the times, taking and giving, reflecting and promoting new ideas and values, insofar as it is itself tied to time, to dignity and to truth.
“Zëri i Popullit” has not escaped the storms and hardships of the times. There have been difficult periods for it and for the people and the country, there have been challenges and sacrifices. It was “Zëri i Popullit” that, above all, touched and conveyed throughout the Albanian world the concerns, and even the serious wounds, of our national history. In recent years it has been part of all the country’s democratic processes, highlighting and valuing everything truly progressive for Albania. Today, one cannot speak of the media and free thought in Albania without seeing “Zëri i Popullit” as an example of conscience and civic culture, without calling it an independent institution of thought and open information. It now lives alongside the changes in society and in Albanian journalism itself under present conditions.
The creation of a democratic independent press through the various newspapers and magazines in Albania enhances and strengthens the newspaper’s entire public and social activity. In the deepest sense, “Zëri i Popullit” continues to be a tribune of free speech, carrying the culture of democratization and human and national emancipation. In the name of this ideal it has earned authority and respect throughout the spiritual and patriotic sphere. These are and remain a great merit of the role of “Zëri i Popullit”, the only national tribune of free speech, of civic spirit and its grandeur. It is more than a newspaper: a tribune of pluralism, freedom and humanism. “Zëri i Popullit” has never ceased living with the pulse of the times, with events, with the pains and hopes, with the dreams and ideals of the Albanian person. This makes it a special public and social institution, useful and emancipatory.
It has undoubtedly been and remains a tribune of free speech and of debate on ideas, where the reader has not only received the necessary information, but has also communicated in the most vivid language with the problems of current affairs, with the great and sensitive issues of the country and the nation. In this sense, “Zëri i Popullit” is a newspaper of truth, citizenship and human emancipation. This is not only in the sense of free speech, but also of the responsibility to guide a society in transition toward new standards of democratic culture.
Today, as Albania has entered a new historical stage, with complex political, economic and moral challenges, “Zëri i Popullit” has the duty to preserve and strengthen its public mission. The newspaper remains a voice of reason, balance and civic responsibility, helping consolidate democratic institutions and a culture of dialogue. This is its best legacy and its greatest obligation to the generations to come.
