Albanians will no longer speak with the language of refugees

Prime Minister Nano declares to the BBC “I invite you to come to Albania, because democracy is developing. I respect political emigration. Politics destroyed the country, but it was not the whole story. The pyramid crisis, the outflow of money abroad, and the collapse of the Albanian state also destroyed Albania” . This is what the Albanian prime minister, Fatos Nano, said yesterday in an interview for the BBC, in which he stated that Albania is now being rebuilt rapidly, is achieving success, and he believes that soon the Albanian refugees scattered across Europe will return. When asked what the government's objective is in this situation, Nano replied: “To build governance with a civic partnership, to create a new constitution as soon as possible, and to revive the self-confidence of Albanians.” He added that he hoped to regain the trust and credibility of the police, the courts, and the army, and that these are the main priorities of his government. Mr. Nano said that under his government Albania will liberalize its economy and privatize everything except industries that are of particular importance to the state and that are necessary to preserve social balance. “Our fiscal system and state mechanisms are very different from those of the past. People want to feel that their future is to be decided in Europe and not in Africa,” said the Albanian prime minister. Asked about the uncertain future of the pyramid schemes, which destroyed the country's economy at the beginning of this year, Nano said that 40 percent of Albanian families and 25 percent of GDP were tied to these schemes. “The only possible destination for Albanians' savings was the so-called investment in these schemes. He cannot answer for what happened in the past, but his government is trying to preserve families' money honestly,” Nano said. Nano said that for the second time since taking office, he would visit Italy and Greece, the two countries where most Albanian refugees have been sheltered. “I appeal to all Albanians and influential people there to think about an Albania where order and law govern. And next year the world should focus more on Albania's economic development,” said the Albanian prime minister. Nano revealed that the 15 socialists imprisoned under Berisha's government would be released. Regarding Kosovo, he said that his government fully supports the autonomy of the Albanian-dominated region. “We are against any terrorist action by the Serbian side and against any terrorist action by the Albanian side. We want peace and we want dialogue.” Asked whether his government would punish the crimes of the past, given the exodus of refugees, the theft of foreign funds, abuses of power, and the opening of weapon depots, he said: “In the name of the Albanian people, I am pleased to tell them all that we are moving beyond finding the culprits. We are trying to build an efficient state administration, restore calm, and encourage foreign investment. This is very important.” “I appeal to influential people, governments, and Western institutions to seek a language of understanding and cooperation. In my opinion, we must take the steps forward to close the wounds of the internal conflict and move toward a peaceful and progressive society,” the Albanian prime minister concluded in yesterday's interview for the BBC.
