Statement by the Spokesman of the U.S. State Department, Mr. James P. Rubin
The U.S. government strongly condemns the assassination attempt
"The whole government of America is concerned about efforts to prevent anarchy in the Parliament of Albania. Azem Hajdari, an Albanian government...?" [?]
"Irene? of Parliament in Tirana, Mr. Hajdari was killed yesterday in an assassination attempt. The United States strongly condemns this act and calls on all governing factors and the opposition in Albania to avoid violence and act peacefully, and to make clear that protests are unacceptable and that the government must continue to function. We have made it clear to the Albanian government that maintaining calm, after all the recent explosions, is so important that we have placed it at the center of our discussions with them. Albania must continue on the path of political and economic reforms."

I learned with deep indignation the
news of the shooting in the
Parliament of MP
Azem Hajdari. This ugly act,
indifference and
primitive revenge of the
despised crowd arouses the anger of
all Albanians in a way that is for
the Albanian as a person.
Let them go and love the
peace that all Albanians want from
the South to the North.
