The issues raised in the socialist leader’s speech have a much broader scope than changing a minister or preserving at all costs the balance among the parties making up the governing coalition. The reasoning of those who narrow the range of issues raised by Fatos Nano to merely a few changes in government is refuted by Albanian political reality itself. As is well known, the PS came to power with the people’s plebiscitary vote and had such a majority that it faced no obstacle to governing alone. In this sense, the five-party government coalition—the broadest agreement achieved in the history of pluralism in our country—was not only a great victory for democratic and progressive forces and the embodiment of a new concept with which the socialists entered government; above all, it was an expression of the necessity to govern differently after the crisis of extraordinary proportions in Albania at that time. Put differently, we are dealing with a value created by the new political class, which has undertaken not merely to govern the country, but to rebuild the state destroyed by adventurist paradoxes and remake Albania, which a criminalized political clan had brought to the brink of the abyss.
