According to a new report by the Supreme State Audit, 666 unlawful actions and abuses involving property and state funds were uncovered during 1997–1998, amounting to 4 billion and 200 million lek. According to the statement of Chief Controller Blerim Çela to journalists, the audit covered 931 inspections in 931 institutions and 1,055 audits were carried out, revealing economic damage to the state amounting to 4 billion and 200 million lek. Of this amount, violations in procedures and documentation as well as discrepancies totaling 2.7 billion lek were identified. From these amounts, compensation was proposed for 766 officials and former officials of the state administration.
