Socialist leader Nano and International Secretary Dade at the meeting of the Council of the Socialist International • Nano holds meetings at the European Commission with officials responsible for Albania’s Stabilisation and Association process with the European Union BRUSSELS — Under the auspices of the Party of European Socialists, a round table with the region’s Social Democratic parties, including those of Kosovo, Macedonia, and Montenegro, will be held in Tirana in the third week of June. This was decided yesterday in Brussels during the proceedings of the Council of the Socialist International. The theme of this round table will be: “Parties of progress, their modernization reforms, and the example of the PSSH for this purpose.” The Council’s proceedings were opened by its President, Antonio Gutieres, and the central topics expected to be turned into conclusions are: “The challenges of globalization from a social-democratic perspective” and “Harmonizing the effects of market globalization with employment and social-care policies.” Several proposals are also being debated, with a view to turning them into resolutions: reclassifying developing countries according to their debt burden, in order to achieve debt relief and, in some cases, cancellation of the entire debt, as well as poverty reduction. During the Council’s proceedings, Mr Nano met with Antonio Gutieres, Valter Veltroni, and leaders of other sister parties. Today, party leader Nano also held meetings at the European Commission with officials responsible for the Stabilisation and Association process, which Albania expects to sign within this year. At his meeting with Mr Barba-zo, Director-General for the Stabilisation and Association process, Mr Nano discussed the measures the government and the majority are taking and will take to create the conditions for an irreversible integration process and to implement all the conditions and measures included in the status report for the Stabilisation and Association negotiations. The meeting emphasized reform of the civil service and the financial and banking system, and reducing the share of customs duties in the budget by increasing the collection of tax revenue from private businesses within the country. The transition from a cash-based informal economy to a standardized economy of banking operations and financial institutions was considered an essential necessity. Mr Barba-zo and his team expressed their understanding and full commitment to accelerating all the steps that lead to fulfilling the commitments undertaken. At a meeting with Gerhard Shatabil, Director for Southeastern Europe and Albania for the Stabilisation and Association process, Mr Nano praised the OSCE’s role in preparing the local elections. The two interlocutors agreed on the role of the majority in the future and on creating, together with the OSCE, a center here involving young people who will ensure that the electoral process in Albania is transparent, democratic, and fair.
