ISSUE OF THE DAY The problem of the robbery of the State Treasury, part of which was stored in the tunnels of Krraba, finally seems to be moving toward being brought to light. The opposition is playing its game: it has declared that this gold was stolen by Socialist officials. This game is in keeping with its logic, which began with the Pyramid Schemes: after organizing and promoting them, and mobilizing them as if it were a failed whim, putting the pyramid bosses at the forefront to make them a crowd of rich men with money; even at their children’s weddings, it accused the PS and Nano of stealing the crumbs that remained! But everyone knows what game the PD is playing! The way to save the government and the PS is to uncover the truth about this case, which has stirred the Albanian people. Albanian Prime Minister Ilir Meta called for the Prosecutor’s Office to intervene in the matter. The two expert examinations carried out on 8 and 13 March, compared with the documents from the last inventory conducted in these tunnels, show that a mechanical theft took place in March 1997. On the basis of traces found at the scene, three people have been arrested and two others are being sought; their traces have now been archived. That is the story of the robbery, whose stolen amount, according to the official statement, is USD 2.8 million. The problem is enforcement of the state law, which requires an inventory every three months of deposits of this kind by three representatives of the National State Bank, the Ministry of Public Order and the Ministry of Finance. These inspections were not carried out regularly either when the PD was in power or during the PS’s time in government! We have laws—good ones, and plenty of them—but we have neither people who know and enforce them nor a supervisor to monitor the degree to which parliamentary laws and state decisions are implemented. In this robbery, there is no need to remind the PD that the PS did not steal USD 6 million from the Shkodër Treasury in 1997, nor is it worth reminding them about those thieves who “set up the thieving camp”! In connection with this robbery, this is not the occasion to remind the PD that there are many flaws in its accusations, from allegations linked to “KJ” reports, when it had been burned by the PD, to calls for Nano’s arrest when he was in Berisha’s prison at the time. The statements by “poet” Halit Shamata are not guaranteed to be true either. The thieves will be found very soon. But what can be done to ensure that such events can no longer happen? Therefore, alongside the thieves, the Prosecutor’s Office must also bring criminal proceedings against those who draw a government salary but do not enforce its decisions! Only in this way can crime in Albania be stopped, because the state must work 24 hours a day without a break, not in shifts!
