ISSUE OF THE DAY Berisha’s visit to Vlorë is scheduled for Sunday, and television news reports clearly show that the situation in the martyred city of Vlorë is no longer calm. People are speaking both for and against this visit, and this is natural in a democratic country; the problem, however, is that the statements are extremely polarized and far removed from democratic tolerance. Albania has currently embarked on a positive course, which is being recognized by the international community, and the country is on the verge of receiving very significant foreign investment. The situation in Kosovo is moving steadily toward stabilization, while Albanians have returned to work and are beginning to invest again in the assets they own in the country. Destabilizing the country at this moment, which is favorable for us all, would prove fatal for Albania. The world would close its doors to us again, and the investments we need so badly would once more be postponed to the Greek calends. Precisely for these reasons, and also to avoid hatred for one another, the people of Vlorë must remain cool-headed and prudent on Sunday. They must not fall prey to provocations or momentary tensions, must not respond to quarrels, and must not revive old grudges. The Vlorë police should be helped on this delicate day so that they can focus solely on how the rally proceeds and are not scattered across a hundred fronts, thereby unable to do their duty. The people of Vlorë, regardless of religion or political affiliation, are patriotic people and, for the sake of their blood and their heart, must show tolerance and wisdom on Sunday. The most appropriate way to take a stand is through the vote. The elections are approaching, and the people of Vlorë, like all Albanians, will have the opportunity to express their opinion democratically through their vote. To fall prey to provocations in Vlorë on Sunday, regardless of who is to blame, would mean destroying with your own hands, in a single moment, all the achievements and the future prospects of a people. Vlorë of the flag, Vlorë of resistance, Vlorë of the martyrs, Vlorë of work, beautiful Vlorë, must show prudence on Sunday. Not because you should give way to a fool, but for Albania’s sake and for the sake of our children. Prudence on Sunday will be another outstanding patriotic act by this city, which will stand proudly alongside the city’s other outstanding patriotic acts!
