The end of the sigh “When will we have roads too?” The end of the sigh: “When will we have roads too?” The Meta Cabinet has once again allocated funds for roads, and if we look only at recent months, it emerges that the government has provided around 1.5 billion lek for roads. This money has not come so much from the increase in taxes paid by the people as from a financial policy that has considerably limited tax evasion. These substantial sums allocated to repair the country’s infrastructure will grow considerably if the projects are implemented on time and to the proper standard, since they would help activate all the country’s resources now paralysed by the wretched roads we have. If the Meta Cabinet has shown maximum determination to repair the roads by providing money without stint, and has been iron-fisted with every official who is failing to carry out their road-related duties, the battle cannot be considered over here. The battle must continue without any compromise against fraudulent contractors who have paralysed the work and want to pass off soap as cheese to Albanians. The money allocated for roads is the money of Albanian taxpayers and must therefore be regarded as sacred money, from which no one should profit. The cycle is now drawing to a close: Albanians are paying their taxes, the government is allocating their money to repair the roads, and taxpayers must see how their money has been put to use. There is a moral principle here, and it must guide all the government’s work, keeping the door shut to the corrupt and the unscrupulous. There can be no absurd compromises or tolerance on this matter; instead, the legislation must be improved so that tenders are not treated as money to be pocketed and people no longer show up at tender-signing offices carrying suitcases full of cash. The roads are Albania’s shame, our paralysis, our stress, and this shameful situation must end now that the money is available. If until yesterday officials could hide behind modest investment, today no one can use that argument any longer. The people’s sigh, “When will we have roads too?”, must come to an end! But the end begins by removing the swindlers, thieves and the unscrupulous; they are not difficult to identify!
