Cut off the illicit sources of funding that finance crime The Republic’s Prosecutor General, Arben Rakipi, has called on his team to wage a more effective fight against crime, particularly serious crime. His request comes at a time when prosecutors are being attacked by the opposition and the media for poor performance, although the blame for the often-ridiculous sentences lies not with them, but with the courts. The latest case, in which a criminal released by the Court of Appeal in Tirana opened fire on the Vlora police, fully justifies Rakipi in raising his voice in favor of a tougher policy toward crime of every kind. Rakipi’s initiative should be welcomed in every respect, since consolidating the state in Albania entails a constant expansion of the areas in which criminals operate, and it is understandable that their reaction at this moment will be more violent. The serious crimes committed in the country in recent days, following a period of calm, show that criminals have now gone on the offensive to frighten the state and force it to retreat, so that they can regain the territory they have lost for their activities. Let Bruka’s murder be the end of the attacks on the police On Wednesday evening, crime struck again and killed another police officer, the head of anti-smuggling, 30-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Kastriot Bruka. He had been a police chief in several districts of the country, including Burrel, Dibër, Krujë, Laç and Durrës, and most recently at one of the points where crime is struck at its heart: anti-smuggling. The shadows of night killed Kastriot as he was returning home to his family. The press immediately put forward several theories about why Kastriot might have been killed. Other theories may also be raised, since he was present when Azem Hajdari was detained in Laç. But none of these theories—which essentially claim that Kastriot had stepped on someone’s toes—should be accepted. A defender of order and the law does not step on anyone’s toes! It is those who break the law who step on his! The murder of a senior officer of our police force must be the last attack on people who uphold the law. The police and the state must demonstrate through concrete action that no one should ever again dare raise a hand against the state’s people! (Continued on page 14)
