By Arben Iliazi The 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights seems likely to be marked by far more division than last year. In this 50th anniversary year, even the debates at the center and the periphery have a very different light. Although through several long roundtables intellectuals were mobilized to illuminate the dark sides of Albanian politics, that does not mean things have improved. Albanian diplomacy hides behind intervention for Albania, and the opening of the borders has remained better for ordinary people, who are more aware of the situation. In today’s world, can one expect anything else? Human rights, yesterday and today, here and there, all have light and shadow within them. If you stand at the top of the agencies, it seems as if the universe is there and life is an endless kaleidoscope. In a single moment, a person not only feels free, but can also rise above the darkness of the world, forgetting that everything else is forbidden. Albania is violated. You find human rights always on the periphery or in the vicious circle. Meanwhile, on every chair on the boulevard, for every girl who has enough time to join the crowd, with glasses and elegant words, for every man, bed and office, with notes and memos, he feels as if he is protected by the law. Yet the latter is surrounded by an abyss and darkness. Without that latter, there would be neither conscience, nor environment, nor market. Without its company, society would have no meaning.
