Here are Meksi’s new people

GOVERNMENT The ministers are appointed. Shehi and Vrioni replace Kopliku and Uka, Zhulali stays, while Cela and Spaho also leave. Who will lead the Ministry of Labour? Here are Meksi’s new people But the PR immediately leaves the coalition FATOS BAXHAKU TIRANA — A new cabinet led by Meksi came into being on Sunday. About half of the ministers changed their previous posts, including Meksi’s former deputies Uka and Kopliku. The decision announced on Sunday at the headquarters caused immediate reactions within the parties. The harshest of all seems to be that of the Republicans, who announced their withdrawal and that of their group from the Government. Thus Meksi’s current cabinet is in fact a coalition between PD and PSD, the latter now represented by Minister of Culture Laço. In an interview with Gazeta Shqiptare, the Republicans’ first meeting was addressed by their leader himself, Godo. “Today I formally told Meksi that we are no longer part of the coalition,” Godo said. “We have long declared that the government should make deep changes in the way it governs, and it should do so through a carefully studied programme, although this was not done through the relevant decisions.” The Republicans’ move has also left one cabinet post of Meksi’s government unnamed. In the official announcement distributed on Sunday, the name of the new Minister of Labour no longer appears on the list of new ministers. This post had been proposed to the Republicans, but they did not accept it. “Talks were held these days, but we did not reach an agreement, not because we are against individual candidacies but for the reasons stated above,” said Godo. Only a few moments earlier, Shehi of the PD had said in Tirana that this post had been proposed to the PD. The Socialist opposition has once again reiterated its skepticism. “We wish the new ministers good work,” said the Deputy Chairman of the PS, Servet Pëllumbi, for Gazeta Shqiptare, “but we do not believe anything will change in the current problems. In my opinion, more than changing people, the Government should take a harder line in the fight against corruption in all forms and, secondly, carry out a full analysis of the whole governance to identify its weak points. That cannot be done with one stroke.” In the PD, by contrast, they believe the changes will bring a new spirit to the Government. According to Tritan Shehu, this is the main reason for the appointment of the new ministers. And the accusations of corruption? “No one can be accused without evidence. Of course I cannot deny that there may be corruption in some ministry, but concrete proof is needed for that. The main objective of the new government’s arrival is to give the government a new breath.” Ministers removed from the cabinet: Bashkim Kopliku, Deputy Prime Minister Rexhep Uka, Minister without Portfolio for Local Government Kudret Çela, Minister of Justice Pirro Disha, Minister of Economy and Finance Ilir Mëhilli, Minister of Construction, Housing and Territorial Planning Fatos Bitincka, Minister of Transport Edmond Spaho, Minister of Tourism New appointments in the Government: Agron Musaraj, Minister of Internal Affairs Dashamir Shehi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction and Tourism Dylber Vrioni, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Arben Brokaj, Minister of Industry, Transport and Trade Njazi Kosovrasti, Secretary of State for Local Government Hektor Frashëri, Minister of Justice Teodor Laço, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Government headquarters Meksi’s government spared Zhulali in the Ministry of Defence, whose position had been shaken considerably after the votes in the PD National Council. The explanation seems to be that this time it was Meksi, not Berisha, who prevailed. “The decision to leave Zhulali in post,” said one of the senior PD leaders, “is a compromise between the President and the Prime Minister. The former wanted him to remain in the post he had.”

He beat a child: sentenced to 14 years

Elbasan, exemplary court sentence ELBASAN — The court of Elbasan has sentenced 27-year-old M.A. to 10 years in prison; he was brought before the bench accused of “sexual relations by force with a minor”. The disgraceful incident, which had also outraged public opinion, had taken place in May. It was precisely M.A. who had deceived a 13-year-old girl. After luring her into his car, he took her to the outskirts of the city, where he committed the criminal act. The rapist then managed to reach Italy. But the hope of escaping justice lasted only a few days, thanks to cooperation between Albanian police and Interpol. M.A. has been repatriated to be punished not with seven but nine months and to hand over the evidence to the Minister of Police in Elbasan. The evidence gathered by the investigators forced him to be thrown into handcuffs and made the author of the crime. Lezhë, 12-year-old dies in an accident while going to school LEZHË — She had set out for school but ended up under the wheels of a car. This is the tragedy of 12-year-old R. C., from the village of Ishull-Lezhë, who lost her life on Saturday in the Tirana hospital. It must have been an accidental mishap that would have warned the government. Meanwhile, the first investigations by the police inspectorate showed that the car that took the girl’s life was being driven by a man later identified in connection with the serious incident. I. R.

Il furto era stato compiuto entrando dalla finestra della sua abitazione. Quattro giorni dopo, quando ogni speranza sembrava persa, una persona sconosciuta ha restituito la borsa con l’ingente somma.

YESTERDAY IN THE WORLD

Turkey supplied Sarajevo with weapons Turkey has sent weapons to Bosnia, thereby violating the UN embargo, says General Dogan Gures in an interview given to the Istanbul newspaper Hurriyet, specifying that the destination was the Sarajevo government, which received 90 percent of the weapons taken from Croatian authorities. From the interview, which includes details on these topics, it is not clear whether the weapons supply is still continuing. The reports are considered important because General Gures was chief of the general command and remains on active wartime status because of age. Hungary: 31 dead on a train There are 31 deaths in the railway incident that occurred on Friday in Hungary. The news was made public by the Hungarian agency MTI, which also specified that 59 people were hospitalized, three of them in very serious condition.
