The President is said to have needed only three days to eliminate opponents Berisha promulgates “genocide” Will Berisha be sued before the Constitutional Court? Berisha needed only five days to promulgate the “Law against Genocide”. But perhaps he needed even less to eliminate his main opponents from politics if last weekend, as an ordinary citizen and not as president, he was thinking about daily bread, Teuta’s upcoming match with Parma, or some feature film—thoughts which, if he had them, should not have left him much time for state laws. In short, the president needed only Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to think about political opponents. Serreqi does not give in to Papulias

New York Serreqi does not give in to Papulias The joint committee for Greek schools is convened Greek Foreign Minister Karolos Papulias used yesterday’s meeting with his Albanian counterpart, Alfred Serreqi, to repeat Athens’ request for the opening of three state schools in the Greek language in three southern cities: Gjirokastër, Delvinë, Sarandë. The meeting took place yesterday in one of the rooms of the UN Glass Palace in New York, where the two ministers were present to take part in the organization’s proceedings. Both ministers maintained the same position they had during their meeting in Athens four weeks earlier. Papulias insisted, Serreqi did not give in. The two had a disagreement over the number of minorities, which Papulias presented as higher than Serreqi’s figure. To verify the numbers on the ground, the two ministers returned to the well-known tradition of joint committees and decided that the six-member committee, three for each side, should urgently begin work. The Greek side’s request has now become a Gordian knot. It has even eclipsed the other topics of discussion of the many factual problems awaiting solutions: such as the legalization of Albanian emigrants in Greece, the removal of the visa system for Greek citizens traveling to Albania, etc. In any case, although yesterday’s meeting produced no concrete result for either side, according to the Greek media the meeting was cordial and the dialogue remains open. 4 months in prison requested

The trial against Gjergj Zefi is nearing its end Zefi: “I ask for justice because I feel innocent” The trial against Gjergj Zefi is nearing its end 4 months in prison requested Zefi: “I ask for justice because I feel innocent” TIRANA - The penultimate hearing in the trial against the president of the PAD assembly and journalist Gjergj Zefi has taken place. The prosecutor in the case has requested two prison terms of two months each for the two charges against him, while the lawyer and the journalist himself have requested acquittal. Tomorrow at 10:00 the court panel is due to deliver its final word for the 24-year-old. At the beginning of yesterday’s hearing in the case against Gjergj Zefi, the prosecutor, Mr. Kadri Skreka, requested a reclassification of the criminal offense of which he is accused. After the lawyer’s protest and a ruling by the court panel, this request was not accepted, forcing the prosecutor to present his closing argument. Arrested nearly a month ago, Zefi is accused of having committed the criminal offense of defamation, published openly in various newspapers, against Prof. Bujar Hoxha and Ylber Meraja, former chief of the Gjirokastër police station at the time of the Peshkëpi massacre. The two prosecution representatives are asking for the journalist to be found guilty of defamation and sentenced to four months’ imprisonment. It was then the turn of the lawyer Artan Gjylbegu to defend his client. Using legal arguments, he rejected the claims of the prosecution and requested acquittal for his client. Zefi also took the same position, declaring: “I ask for justice because I feel innocent.” Judge Miranda Noja has set 10:00 tomorrow as the time for delivering the verdict for the president of the Assembly of the Democratic Alliance Party.
