The table where the absence continues

BY ALEKSANDËR ÇIPA Which force in Albanian politics gave representation its meaning? That question is as old as it is current. The state OR “the state”? It is one form of politics, and its independence has been seized by an extreme thirst for power, to the point of stripping even the opposition completely of credibility and identity. In today’s political scene, the relationships between those in power and the opposition are not what they may seem or be conventionally described as. More precisely, they are distorted into a “fiction,” even in their outward meaning. But what is happening with the opposition now, for example? Has it fallen into irresponsibility? It is clear that yes, there is a visible poverty and radicalism in relation to its representation by the major and distinctive figures who inspire it. From their preoccupation with themselves and their narrow ego, to the well-known protagonism of people who do not have the culture to place themselves properly in a position. Moreover, we ourselves have clear evidence that we have an opposition that is not sustained by the proper course of society. In the new ranks of this [?], this is now happening in a further attack on representation. It seems that some resentment or a crisis in understanding the role and purpose for the Albanian political scene has caused this party side to remain aligned in a concrete absence. The “joint table” is taking shape in an environment of hopeless proximity. There is a kind of civic and institutional fatigue in the face of it. Therefore the question above remains of constant importance. In the tables now being discussed in Tirana, we are undoubtedly dealing with a delayed mechanism for dialogue. But at the same time it must be said that the substance of representation is still missing there. The opposition and the government appear unclear in their roles. This makes it even harder to turn the table into a real instrument for solving problems. If the public expects political conflict, it also expects worthy representation. That remains faint and, moreover, short-sighted. (The article continues on page 7)
