THE WIDEST POSSIBLE USE OF MEDICINAL PLANTS, IN LINE WITH CONTEMPORARY PRACTICE AND PHARMACEUTICAL TRADITION
AT THE DEBATE FORUM
They appear in first place in the export of medicinal plants, ahead of many developed industrial countries, but this should not lead us to complacency. Medicinal and tannin plants, raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry, are a great national asset that has been misused. This is harmful to the country’s economy. In the discussions on the problems of producing and collecting medicinal plants, organized at the Agricultural Propaganda House by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Academy of Sciences of the RPSSH, the real possibilities for increasing their quantity were analyzed. Our medical and pharmaceutical traditions regarding the use of medicinal plants were assessed, with particular mention of figures from Albanian folk medicine. KASO MUÇO, deputy director of the Pharmaceutical Research Center of the RPSSH, noted, among other things, that many species of plants growing in Albania have long been used in folk medicine. Some of them are also used in modern medicine. He emphasized the importance of scientifically identifying their chemical composition and therapeutic value. The need to expand the areas cultivated with medicinal plants, and to improve their collection, drying, and processing, was discussed. It was also stressed that indiscriminate gathering must be avoided, since it damages the natural stock and lowers the quality of production. Participants emphasized that our country has great potential for the production and export of medicinal plants. This requires better organization, broader involvement of agricultural cooperatives and forestry enterprises, as well as stronger scientific support. It was requested that Albanian pharmaceutical tradition be studied more deeply and linked more closely with contemporary research. (Continues on page 3)
