THE NANO ISSUE IS A BLOW TO CONTEMPORARY ALBANIAN LIFE

Without departing from the underlying idea that the deputy chairman of the Socialist Party for the past 15 years has been in solidarity with that part of public opinion that strongly condemns the injustice of the prosecuting authorities toward former Prime Minister Fatos Nano. I have also consistently expressed this support publicly, but on the other hand no one can ask me to think and argue as Fatos Nano does. Those who hate him or envy him, or who simply feel a bestial emotion before the evil that happens to another, are not much concerned with the case of a single man; rather, they are concerned with the fact that for the first time in many years the standard of the state and of the rule of law in Albania is being called into question. We are facing a test that goes beyond the personal fate of Fatos Nano. The way this case is resolved will also determine citizens’ trust in the law, in the courts, in the prosecutor’s office, and in politics itself. In this sense, the Nano issue is a striking event in contemporary Albanian life. Public opinion and all political forces have the right to demand full transparency, proper procedure, and respect for human dignity. Any attempt to treat this process as political revenge seriously damages the state and society. Therefore, this debate cannot remain merely a matter of names; it concerns the way we will live tomorrow in Albania, the relationship between power and the citizen, between law and arbitrariness.[?]

In the Assembly chamber, the debate focused on issues of reform, institutional responsibilities, and the political crisis that had been dragging on for months. Various speakers pointed out that citizens expect solutions, not excuses. Criticism was levelled at gaps in the administration, the slow pace of change, and the use of the rostrum for unproductive polemics. Some deputies called for parliamentary work to become more disciplined and more useful to the country. The debate was accompanied by interventions, applause, and occasional interruptions, while the chairperson was forced several times to ask for calm in the chamber. (To be continued on page 4)
